Who we are

I'm Zakaria Zainal. I run Zainal & Zainal from our studio on Robinson Road, a three-minute walk from Raffles Place MRT.

Before I built a commercial practice, I spent years doing documentary work. My long-form project the Singapore Gurkha Trilogy was exhibited at Noorderlicht International Photography Festival in the Netherlands and the Dali International Photography Exhibition in China, and supported by a Fotovisura Grant. I've authored books on Singapore history commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore and the National Heritage Board. I hold an MA in Digital Management from Hyper Island and have been an adjunct lecturer at Nanyang Technological University. I have given two TEDx talks on visual storytelling.

None of this is mentioned to pad out a bio. It explains how I work.

Documentary photography trains you to read a room. To understand what a person is carrying, how they hold themselves, what they need before they'll relax in front of a lens. That practice doesn't switch off when the subject changes from a Gurkha soldier to a Chief Executive. The same attention is what makes a portrait feel like the person, rather than a session they endured.

"Zack and his team delivered the final products with a quick turnaround time. We appreciated the team's effort in understanding our needs prior to the shoot, and ensured that our principals felt comfortable and at ease throughout."

— Communications Team, Ministry of Manpower

What We Photograph

What a project with Zeiss Southeast Asia looked like

Zeiss Southeast Asia is a regional headquarters operation with over 200 employees in Singapore. Their brief required executive portraits that could hold up across internal corporate communications, regional marketing materials, and the kind of formal institutional contexts a global brand operates in.

The challenge with any multinational brief is consistency: different faces, different hierarchies, different expectations about what "professional" looks like — all needing to produce a single coherent visual language. We began with a written brief and a studio plan, agreed the visual register before any equipment was moved, and shot with live tethered review so the communications team could check alignment in real time.

The result was a set of portraits that worked across every channel they were destined for. Not because we imposed a single formula on every subject, but because we understood what the images needed to do before we started.

Who we work with?

Our clients are typically heads of communications, marketing directors, HR leaders, or executive assistants briefing on behalf of C-suite. They come to us when the brief matters — when a photograph will appear in a sustainability report, a regional campaign, a speaker profile, or a board-level publication.

"Zack delivered the goods on a project for the National University of Singapore, working in tight sync with my team and capturing portraits that brought to vivid life the unifying idea behind our campaign. He was always on time, responsive and approachable."

— David Shaw, Founder & Principal Consultant, CourageousBrands

How a project works

Step 1: The Brief — We ask how the photos will be used: annual report, website, LinkedIn, press, sustainability report. That determines lighting, background, framing, and how many looks we need per person. This conversation happens before the booking is confirmed.

Step 3: The Shoot — We work with a tethered setup for live review, so your communications or HR team can check alignment on-screen as we go. Most people need about five minutes to settle in front of a camera. We account for that. We do not rush subjects.

Step 2: The Plan — A written shot list, studio or location plan, and agreed visual standard. For larger team shoots, we coordinate a schedule with your team to minimise disruption to operations.

Step 4: The Delivery — Edited, full-resolution files. Turnaround agreed before the shoot begins. We have met every deadline we have been given.

"He was receptive to new ideas for the shoot, which made the whole working experience an enjoyable one. His skills, vision and working style did not disappoint."

— Michelle N, Senior Manager, NAMIC

FAQs

What is corporate portrait photography?

1

Corporate portrait photography is professional photography of individuals and teams for business use — including executive headshots, leadership group portraits, and environmental portraits that show professionals in their work context. The images are used in annual reports, company websites, LinkedIn profiles, sustainability reports, media releases, and investor communications.

Who is the best corporate portrait photographer in Singapore for executives?

2

Zainal & Zainal, led by Zakaria Zainal, is a specialist studio for executive and leadership team photography based in Singapore's CBD. The studio has worked with major institutions and multinationals since 2010, including Temasek Foundation, Zeiss Southeast Asia, Schneider Electric, Allen & Gledhill, and the Ministry of Manpower.

For individual executive portraits, one to two weeks is usually sufficient. For leadership team shoots of ten or more people, three to four weeks is preferable — coordinating schedules across a senior group takes time, and we want to plan the shoot properly, not squeeze it.

3

How far in advance should we book?

Can you match our existing visual style or brand guidelines?

4

Yes. If your organisation has a visual language from a previous shoot that needs to be matched — lighting style, background, colour register — send us references and we will align to them before the day.

Do you shoot at our office or at your studio?

5

Both. We select studios that match your brief. We also shoot on-location at offices and boardrooms across Singapore. For regional briefs, we have worked in Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Phnom Penh.

What does retouching include?

6

Standard retouching is included: skin, light corrections, and background cleanup. We do not apply heavy editing that changes how a person actually looks. Our clients are recognised by colleagues and clients in real life. That matters more than a photograph that flatters in isolation.

Pricing depends on the number of subjects, location, and usage requirements. We do not publish rates online because every brief is different. Contact us and we will send a clear quote within one business day.

7

What do you charge?

What if we need photos urgently — within a week?

8

Contact us directly. We accommodate urgent briefs when we have availability and will tell you honestly whether the timeline is workable.

Is Zainal & Zainal a registered business?

9

Yes. Zainal & Zainal LLP is registered in Singapore under UEN T11LL1809H.
